e-Health Research Centre Awards New Fellowship

31 August 2006
Brisbane, Australia

Dr Simon K. Warfield has been appointed an International Fellow with CSIRO's e-Health Research Centre on a two-year term.

Dr Warfield is Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Computational Radiology Laboratory (CRL) at Children's Hospital, Boston.

The Centre's chief executive, Gary Morgan, says the Fellowship is the second that the e-Health Research Centre has awarded this year.

"By continuing to attract renowned experts from overseas, we are able to demonstrate not just our expanding national profile but also our effective engagement with the global e-health sector," Mr Morgan says. "Dr Warfield will bring an additional level of expertise in medical imaging to the Centre's Research and Investment Advisory Committee."

Dr Warfield says: "Medical imaging is one of our most powerful tools for gaining insight into normal and pathological processes that affect health.

"It is pleasing to see the tremendous advances that the e-Health Research Centre is bringing to fruition in the domain of medical imaging and image analysis. This world-leading research is certain to have a significant impact on health care and patient outcomes in the near future."

The CRL was formed in 2001 to improve understanding of the structure and function of the brain and other organs of the human body, to improve the capacity to diagnose and treat disease. It achieves this by developing novel technologies and computational modelling strategies for understanding and interpreting radiological images.

Dr Warfield has ongoing research projects examining the developing human brain with MRI, improving diagnosis and treatment for epilepsy, and understanding white matter connectivity and lesion burden in multiple sclerosis. Dr Warfield is also a research affiliate of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at MIT, and has other international collaborations.

CSIRO's e-Health Research Centre International Fellowships are designed to enable international and Australian-based researchers to be seconded from their organisations to undertake agreed collaborative projects under the auspices of CSIRO's e-Health research program.
